Created in the townships of South Africa, Chakalaka is a simple, spicy dish of onions, tomatoes and often beans. It’s part of a staple diet for South Africans, and is a favorite at braais, (or barbecues).

Chakalaka can be served hot or cold, over mealie pap, with slices of bread, or as a condiment for grilled meats.

This recipe is our very own, Gothata’s recipe:


  • ½ sliced cabbage
  • 2 sliced red onions
  • 3 sliced carrots
  • Assorted peppers sliced
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 60ml cooking oil
  • 2 tbsp chutney
  • 1 tbsp vegetable stock
  • 1 tin baked beans


  1. Fry all the vegetables on a low heat, until tender.
  2. Add salt, cayenne pepper, vegetable stock, chutney.
  3. Lastly add 1 tin of baked beans.
  4. Heat it and serve!
