Verney’s Camp Wildlife Stories February 2024
The arrival of a new pack of wild dogs has brought a sense of excitement to Verney’s Camp this month. With our days reaching high temperatures, we have been heading out on early game drives to look for the pack and have enjoyed relaxing afternoons in camp.
An Unfair Fight
As soon as a clan of hyenas caught the scent of the fresh zebra kill, they started making their way towards it.
Three lionesses had settled down to enjoy their meal when the clan of 12 strong arrived on the scene and picked a fight with the female lions. Out-numbered, but persistent, the lionesses weren’t going to give up their kill so easily and a fight ensued between the lions and hyenas.
Practice Makes Perfect
The job of a mother cheetah is clear. She must ensure she teaches her offspring to hunt, kill and fight with efficiency to ensure their ultimate survival.
This cheetah mother allowed her cubs to practice stalking and hunting a small herd of impala. Their lack of experience was made clear when the impalas caught wind of the oncoming attack and managed to get away. Plenty of practice will be required before these cubs are ready to fend for themselves.
The Local Watering Hole
There has been little rain this month, but the waterhole in front of the camp still has plenty of water. Enough to attract a Superherd of 300 elephants. An ostrich pair has also been spotted regularly just outside of camp, and we were lucky to spot a herd of 25 giraffes close to camp.
With the wildlife coming to camp, we have spent many a summer day enjoying exceptional wildlife viewing from camp. Let’s hope this continues into next month.
Until next time,
Themba
