Ingwe pan Camp Wildlife Sightings February 2024

During February, Ingwe Pan remained closed for the season however, the dedicated staff at the camp still had the privilege of savoring the remarkable wildlife sightings in the vicinity.

The weather has been dry and very hot with the relief of rain only occurring on 4 days this month. Looks like we are in for a very dry winter this year.

A Wild Dog Chase

The staff at camp woke up early for a morning drive around the concession to clear the bushes from the roads. We were so fortunate to stumble across a pack of wild dogs on a hunting an impala. The seven dogs chased, killed and then devoured the impala in less than five minutes.

A Welcome Sight

During the rainy seasons, animals like elephants are so rarely seen because they usually move away into the mountains where there are fresh green foliage and plenty of water. However, because of low rainfall this year in Mana Pools, we have had herds of elephants coming to drink from our pan.

Happy Impala

We had a large herd of impala visiting our main water pan, introducing their young calves to each other. It was enjoyable watching them play, especially since there weren't many carnivores around at the time.

They had ample space to interact with each other, both adults and young, with the young bulls sparing and exercising their neck muscles, demonstrating their fighting skills to the young females.

No More Lamps In Camp

During the rainy season, when we close the camp, we usually cover all the path lamps with black plastic bags so that we can protect the electric cables against the rain as well as protect the lamps themselves from rusting.

One evening, a big bull elephant in musth visited our camp. He was threatened by the black standing scarecrows of the covered lamps, and he fought with them, pulling all the path lamps out the ground.

We have been hard at work prepping and cleaning the camp for our new season and we cannot wait to welcome back our guests so they can experience the most thrilling encounters in Mana Pools.

Until next time,
Shepherd
