Gomoti Plains Wildlife Stories August 2024

This month boasted fantastic weather and wonderful wildlife sightings. However, the highlight was waking up one morning to water in front of camp. The change was a delightful surprise to our guests and the rapid rise in water levels brought buffalo, zebras and elephants to camp, which meant we didn’t need to leave to have epic sightings.

Palm Tree Shuffle

The elephants of the delta have adopted unique methods to obtain the fruit from a palm tree. From a push-and-pull technique to stomping the ground below to cause vibrations to loosen the fruit, these gentle giants will do anything for the sweet, nutrient-rich fruit.

The Gomoti Pride

The suspense built as a pride of lions stalked a herd of buffalo. This time, the lions were no match for the buffalo and the attempt was unsuccessful.

A little while later, we found the lioness grooming her cubs. Licking off the blood on their small faces, it was clear that someone had been successful in the hunt.

Not So Shy

It’s not unusual for a leopard to remain hidden. These shy creatures are solitary beings and prefer time alone. One of our expert guides, Mott, is skilled at spotting animals that have evolved to blend perfectly into their surroundings, becoming almost invisible.

We were bumbling along the flood plain during a game drive when Mott informed us of a leopard in a tree. Had it not been for his eagle eyes, we all would have missed this expert disguise.

Until next time,
