Ngoma Safari Lodge Wildlife Stories September 2024

During the dry month of September, game travels from far and wide to drink from the river below camp. The African plains reach temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius, so we spend our time under the cool shade of the thatch.

Why Did The Elephants Swim To The Other Side?

After a long winter, the grass is either too dry to eat, or there is no grass at all. The wildlife don’t veer too far from the Chobe River as it’s the greatest source of water for miles and so they have to get creative to eat enough to survive.

Elephants are surprisingly strong swimmers and will often cross the river to eat the grass on Sedudu Island. Quite the unbelievable sighting is watching a herd of giant elephants swimming effortlessly through the deep water.

A Bigger Helping

One impala is not enough to feed the growing Serondela pride.

11 Strong, the pride is comprised of six lionesses, three young males and two cubs. Now they must find bigger targets like kudu, zebras and giraffes. We came across the pride on a buffalo kill. With more than enough to go around, the lions shared the meal without conflict.

Daylight Surprise

We were surprised to find two honey badgers grooming each other during the day.

Usually nocturnal mammals, it was a delightful experience watching them play and eventually move off ready for their next meal.

A Trip Highlight

Some guests have a list in their minds about which animals they want to see on safari. While we can never guarantee any sightings, our guides make it their mission to track down the animal using their expert knowledge of the bush.

During a game drive along the banks of the Chobe River, we finally came across a leopard who had come down to the banks to drink.

Cruising

A cruise down the Chobe River is an experience not to be missed at Ngoma Safari Lodge.

From the boat, we can witness the wild from a different perspective. It gives us a chance to watch the birds and hippos, lechwe, waterbuck and elephants as they come down to drink.

On a morning cruise, we came across a couple of crocodiles eating an impala!

Independence Day Celebration

At Machaba Safaris, we are committed to giving back to and supporting the people living in the pristine safari destinations we operate in. Each year on Independence Day, we allocate a total of P10,000.00 for five villages in recognition of its members and how far they have come.

Mabele, Kavimba, Kchikau, Satau and Parakarungu all receive P2,000.00 each to invest in the future of the development of the villages.

From the unbelievable wildlife sightings to a special celebration, we made some unforgettable memories this month with our guests at Ngoma.

Until next time,
