Verney’s Camp Wildlife Stories June 2025
Our cooler winter months are upon us, and we’re taking our blankets and hot water bottles very seriously. Our morning coffee stops are paired beautifully with the rising sun and the misty wilderness that transforms as the sun reaches its midmorning position.
Bloody Hyenas!
Hyenas are incredibly territorial animals, and recently we discovered how serious this predator is about keeping their territory lines clean.
Before we had even set off on our morning game drive, a bloodied hyena sprinted past camp. Seconds later, eight more hyenas ran in the direction of the first. While we aren’t sure of the reason for this chase, we can confidently assume that the hyena being chased has crossed territory lines and invaded another pack’s home range. The invader might have been lured into the reigning pack’s territory by the smell of food, hence the bloodied face, or the blood could have been the animal's own after a brutal fight over the intrusion.

When the Lions Call…
After dinner one evening, guests and guides were seated around the campfire when the lions called out into the night sky.
Jumping onto the game viewers, we headed in the direction of the sound. After some time searching, we found the male lion under a bush close to camp. His eyes glistening in the reflection of the torchlight, reflecting majesty and intense focus.

New Buffaloes on the Block
At Verney’s Camp, the waterhole is often frequented by elephants, kudu and zebras. It’s uncommon that a herd of 40 buffalo comes to visit.
The herd included bulls, cows and calves, and we watched as they slowly took turns drinking from the pan. We’re hoping these buffalo remain in the area.

The Warthog in Charge
A male warthog leads his sounder that has found a home under the camp’s wooden decks. His large tusks are a clear indication of why he’s the warthog in charge, and they are the first thing you see when he saunters over to the waterhole for a drink. The sows and piglets enjoy the safety the decks bring and rarely make an appearance outside of their dark sanctuary.
It was a magical month at Verney’s. June at Verney's Camp was magical and full of surprises. We look forward to sharing more exciting adventures with you next month.
Until next time,
Themba
