Verney’s Camp Wildlife Stories May 2025

Some good and expected rains brought a sudden change to the landscape, and we could feel it. The seasons are changing and bringing a new energy to camp. Tales of Africa were shared with our guests under the night sky, and Africa Day was celebrated in style with dancing and fire in the Verney’s boma.

Playful Porcupines

Night drives are always full of the excitement of the unknown. On a night drive recently, we spotted two porcupines mating. An interesting and complex strategy, the myth was busted, and our guests finally understood how it was done…

New Lions Vie for Territory

The Blue Eye Coalition has been calling almost every night in an attempt to chase away the lions threatening their hold on this territory. The new males arrived through the southern end of the concession.

Both coalitions were elusive during this time until a few nights into the month, when they made their presence known around camp. Two lions scattered into the bush as three lions charged towards camp, stopping about thirty metres away before running away.

Leopard Tracks

During a game drive, we spotted leopard tracks, which led us to where the cat was lounging in a tree. We noticed its tail hanging from between the branches, and as we approached, we saw that the leopard was not alone.

She has caught a steenbok and was leisurely eating while posing for our cameras.

From myth-busting night-time activities to exciting encounters with the wildlife around Verney’s Camp, we have high hopes for what next month brings.

Until next time,
Themba
