Kiri Camp Wildlife Sightings March 2025

The wild African plains are never static. The landscape shifts in size, scope and hue. This month at Kiri Camp, the floodwaters have drastically receded due to less rainfall in the region. Animals that moved into the forests are now returning to the areas near camp as the threat of being trapped by floodwaters has diminished.

Look! It’s A Leopard

Because of last month’s overflowing floodwaters, our favourtie place for sundowners was unreachable. In light of this, we found a beautiful new spot beneath a sausage tree near a flowing river.

One afternoon, we were preparing the area for a surprise sundowner. Our team was setting out the tables and drinks when they noticed a massive male leopard, lazily looking down at them from the tree. The sundowner was abandoned, and instead, the guests were treated to an incredible leopard sighting.

A Feast Fit For The Kings Of The Jungle

A leisurely drive to the picturesque Green Pan turned into an adrenaline-fuelled sighting of our resident pride of lions. Consisting of two adult lionesses and seven teenagers, we arrived on the scene just as the pride brought down a giraffe at the edge of a watering hole.

We watched as the ferocious lions worked together to pin the struggling animal down until it finally died, and the feast began.

Wild Dog Feeding Frenzy

Our guests were enjoying their afternoon tea when a pack of wild dogs ran past the main deck in excitement. We immediately jumped into our safari vehicles and followed them - the dogs were on the hunt. When they finally came across a herd of impala, they seized an opportunity to single one out and bring it down.

Naturally, a feeding frenzy ensued, sending the sound of snarling dogs and crunching bones across the plains. Suddenly, the dogs scattered and started barking frantically. A lioness had appeared and wanted to steal their kill. Unfortunately for her, the wild dogs grabbed what they could and ran off in different directions. Better luck next time.

Thrill Of The Cheetah’s Chase

During an afternoon game drive, just as the sun was setting, we spotted a cheetah lurking in some tall grass and stalking an impala. To our amazement, the cheetah suddenly broke out into a full sprint after the impala. Unfortunately, it didn’t manage to catch its prey, but seeing something move so fast is spectacular.
