A Tired Mum’s Escape to Verney’s Camp

By Shanna Rae Groenewald

Sometimes, all a busy mum needs is a little break - a pause from the whirlwind of motherhood, work, and the constant demands of everyday life. That’s exactly what I found at Verney’s Camp in Hwange National Park, a hidden gem under the Machaba Safaris umbrella.

It was a two-day retreat of pure relaxation, a chance to breathe deeply, soak in the tranquility of the wild, and indulge in a touch of opulence. Verney’s Camp is beautifully remote, nestled in a quiet corner of Hwange, far from the hustle of tourist traffic. There were no game viewers darting around, no guides jostling for sightings - just peace, space, and the raw beauty of the African bush. From the moment I stepped into my room, I felt an immediate sense of calm.

The luxurious yet understated setting was a perfect blend of comfort and wilderness, a sanctuary that welcomed me to truly unwind. One of the unexpected joys of my stay was the company I kept. I found myself joining two wonderful, independent ladies in their seventies, vibrant, full of stories, and embracing the adventure of solo travel. Together, we formed an unlikely but fantastic trio, three solo ladies on safari, reveling in the beauty of Africa.

Verney’s Camp gave me exactly what I needed: a reset, a reminder to slow down, and an unforgettable taste of adventure...

Our guide, David, was nothing short of exceptional. His knowledge and passion for the bush turned every moment into an opportunity to learn and appreciate the intricate details of nature. A walking safari with him was a masterclass in the little things - the art of tracking, the science of dung (yes, even the difference between elephant and bird droppings!), and the subtle signs that tell a story of the wild.

And then, the sightings! A pride of sixteen lions lazily sprawled under a tree after feasting on a fresh kill. A magical sunrise encounter with bat-eared foxes, a rare and special sighting that we had the privilege to observe in silence. Each moment felt like a gift, an experience that couldn’t be rushed or replicated.

When I wasn’t out exploring, I simply embraced the luxury of time. Swimming in the pool, reading a book, sipping on something refreshing while gazing out at the endless landscape - things I rarely get to do as a mum, constantly on the go.

Verney’s Camp gave me exactly what I needed: a reset, a reminder to slow down, and an unforgettable taste of adventure. For any mum craving a break, or any traveler seeking a true escape, this little corner of Hwange is a dream waiting to be experienced.
