Kiri Camp Wildlife Stories March 2024

The summer rains have ceased and the waterholes are shrinking. Without the afternoon showers, the heat persists into the evening and we spending more and more time at the pool at Kiri Camp watching the wildlife go by.

Always Look Up

Natural climbers, the leopards in the Okavango Delta seem the most comfortable resting on the branches of tall trees.

Recently on a game drive, we spotted a leopard casually watching us from her perch in an Ebony tree along the Kiri Channel. We spent some time with her before moving on to explore more of the floodplains.

A Wild Surprise

The afternoon game drive was coming to an end but the search for wild dogs was still on. Having had little luck on the drive, we decided to start heading home only to run into a big surprise.

Within sight of Kiri Camp, Mike, one of our expert guides, spotted a pack of 12 wild dogs resting beneath the shade of some nearby bushes. A perfect ending to the afternoon, we spent some time with the pack before slowly meandering back to camp.

A Close Call

We started following a lioness walking along the Boro Channel when suddenly her demeanour changed.

Taking chase, she started running towards the vehicle at a speed. As the tension rose, she ran straight past the vehicle only for us to realise she was hunting a warthog she had spotted in the distance. Soon after the hunt ended successfully, another lioness came out of the thicket followed by eight cubs!

A month of leopards, lions and wild dogs, we couldn't have asked for better sightings. What does next month hold in store?

Until next time,
Dicks
