Verney's Camp Wildlife Stories February 2026

Weather Report

More revitalising rains fell over Verney’s Camp and Hwange National Park this March. The refreshing showers and cool, cloudy days nourished the land, sustaining months of fertile growth. Mornings often began in a mist with damp air, while gentle rain showers swept across the plains until they stopped around midday. As a result, herbivores in the area walked around with full bellies and adorable babies trailing them.

Cheetah Sighting

During a morning game drive, one of our guides spotted a magnificent adult male cheetah resting in the lush grass after the morning rains. We were immediately thrilled at the sight of such a beautiful creature, but before we could take it all in, he started to move. The cheetah lifted its head and gazed across the vast plains. Moments later, it rose elegantly and moved through the wet grass, possibly in search of its next meal.

Bat-Eared Radar

Bat-eared foxes are one of the cutest animals in Zimbabwe’s wilderness, and while on an evening game drive, we were blessed enough to see a charming pair in the open. They suddenly appeared in front of our vehicle, ears stood upright and alert for any sound that could indicate incoming danger.

Suddenly, they were on the move. Each movement was sharp and wary, broken up only by brief pauses to scan their surroundings. We watched with bated breath as the darted gracefully through the grass, stopping for a final time to look back in our direction before they disappeared into the darkness.

Beauty & Danger

We witnessed a truly heart-pounding moment when we spotted a lioness resting with her cubs nearby our vehicle. We were in awe of the powerful mother just lying there while her cute cubs climbed and tumbled over her and each other. Soon after, the cubs nestled next to their mother, leaving us stunned at how gentle one of the most ferocious animals in the world could be.

Every now and then, she lifted her head to scan their surroundings for any threats or potential prey. We just sat in our vehicle watching as she radiated both protection and danger.

Mating Lions

We were treated to the unforgettable sighting of lions mating right in front of our safari vehicle.

They were in the Ngweshla open area. The male stood watch while the lioness strolled around him. We watched in silence and anticipation, and when they finally started mating, we were fully absorbed by the dramatic display unfolding right in front of us. The power, tension, and rarity of the moment left everyone thrilled for more sightings to come.
