Gomoti Plains Wildlife Stories March 2026

Weather Report

March was the month of weather transitions at Gomoti Plains Camp. Between the hot and humid weather, we experienced three separate downpours, as well as overcast and cloudy days. This was our third-highest month of rainfall this wet season, bringing the total to 1,035mm since November 2025.

The More The Merrier

Even immediately after arrival, breathtaking wildlife sightings are already on offer at Machaba Safaris. After picking up a group of our guests from the airstrip, we spotted the incredible Northern pride of lions. Consisting of 12 lions, we stopped and watched them laze about until a coalition of three males joined them, bringing the total to a staggering 15.

The Real Wild

During a game drive, our guides spotted a pride of lions moving across the Gomoti plains. The males, females, and cubs all totalled up to 11 of the most stunning amber-coloured lions we had ever seen. We followed them for quite a while until the females started stalking a zebra.

They lay in ambush until the unfortunate creature was chased and brought down by the weight of multiple lions. The kill was swift, and the feeding frenzy was even swifter.

Leoaprd Saw

We came across a solitary young male leopard moving across the plains from Sand Ridge road towards the Mopani belt. As stunning as it was, it was not the most photogenic. What was most memorable to us was its powerful, deep, rasping cough. Often described as a rough “sawing” cough, the silence in the air was shattered as the leopard made its presence known to all on our early evening game drive.

Let’s Have A Meal

Cheetahs are some of the most fascinating predators in Africa. Small compared to other hunters like lions and leopards, cheetahs consume only around 2.8kg of meat daily and primarily feed on small to medium-sized prey.

Our guests were delighted to find a female cheetah feeding on a fresh kill. We were ecstatic to see such a rare sighting and spent the afternoon watching her enjoy her meal.

March was an amazing month for predator spotting. Come back next month for another Gomoti Plains Camp Wildlife Stories with Machaba Safaris!

Until next time,
