Gomoti Plains Camp Wildlife Sightings June 2024

As the winter intensifies at Gomoti Plains Camp, temperatures are dropping significantly during this dry season. The rains are starting to become less frequent, meaning that more wildlife has to share an already dwindling water supply while the fauna has to make do with what they have.

Feed For The Camera

The very first sighting this month was spectacular. During one of our safari experiences, our guests managed to spot a cheetah in the middle of a hunt. It stalked its prey slowly, only inching closer to keep up. This feeding habit gave our guests an incredible look at the smallest of the big cats, and an opportunity to take some fascinating photographs.

A Kill In The Night

Our next extraordinary sighing did not come long after the first. Still early on in the month, one of our guides and their guests went on a night drive to see what they could find. With lions being nocturnal hunters, it was not surprising that they found a pride of six lions out and about. What made this sighting amazing was that they were in hot pursuit of a herd of unsuspecting buffalo.

The lions worked together to bring down their powerful prey, jumping, clawing and biting the massive animal to secure a hefty meal for themselves and an unforgettable moment for our guests.

Adapt To Survive

If you know anything about cats, it’s that they hate being in the water. That’s why our guides and their guests were amazed to see a lion crossing the deep waters of the Okavango Delta. This rare sighting shows how far these predators will go to secure their next meal.

There was also a massive herd of buffalo nearby. So, we can only presume that the lion was on its way to pick out its next target.

Mid-Morning Sunbathing

Mornings are chilly here at Gomoti Plains Camp, so while we were enjoying the heat from our mid-morning fire, we heard the distinct call of a leopard. Both our guides and guests sprang up, hopped into a safari vehicle and searched for the beckoning beast.

They headed east, looking at the trees to see if it was not lounging on a branch, only to find it just after Wendys Pool atop a termite mound basking in the morning sun.

Planned To Perfection

Just after the middle of July, our guide Mott planned to drive towards the southern part of the concession and loop around, coming back via the east. To his guests' delight, as his plan was unfolding, they heard a commotion in a nearby bush and upon closer inspection, they found a cheetah just relaxing in the shade. What a wonderful sighting!

Until next time,
