Gomoti Plains Wildlife Stories April 2025

With the dry season upon us, the weather at Gomoti Plains Camp has remained high. Temperatures reached a high of 35 degrees Celsius, but to the relief of many, we also saw a few days of rain and cooler weather throughout April. Thanks to these showers, the waters in front of camp have risen slightly.

We hope the flood waters arrive soon so we can take advantage of the incredible wildlife spotting opportunities.

Brawling Lions

Lions are the most ferocious big cats on the African continent. Their canines can reach up to four inches in length, and their bite is strong enough to kill almost anything with one bite. But what happens when these mighty creatures fight each other?

Two large males stood their ground to a younger lion, who had been encroaching on their territory. The fight was brutal, and the younger lion put up an admirable fight. With an injured leg from one of the older males, the challenger was able to rip the jaw of one of his attackers before running away.

Three days later, we caught up to the two large male lions roaring close to camp, signalling the young lion was back in the area.

African Cats & Dogs

April spoiled us with sightings. During a single game drive, we spotted a mother leopard with her cub, and later, a pack of 18 African wild dogs!

The mother leopard and her six-month-old cub were playing underneath a tree where their kill was hoisted up for safety. The cub was jumping up, running after its mother and practising its stalking. We could not get enough of the dynamics between mother and cub.

When we eventually left the two cats, it was not long before we saw the massive pack of wild dogs in the middle of a hunt.

An Elephant Welcome

We were pleased to host a returning guest who has a deep love for elephants. Without a doubt, elephants were on the agenda to be spotted. Little did we know that when we finally got to see them, there would be over 100 elephants swimming, mud-bathing, feeding and play-fighting.

What a sight!

Wild Dogs At Breakfast

Breakfast at Gomoti Plains camp can be an adrenaline-filled experience.

On this particular occasion, we were enjoying a delicious meal with our morning tea and coffee when a pack of African wild dogs chased an impala through the front of camp towards one of our luxury tents. We all stood up, hopped into our safari vehicles and followed to see what would come of their hunt.

Safe to say breakfast didn’t last long.
