Deteema Springs Wildlife Sightings 2025

Although the rainy season has ended, the pans and dams around Deteema Springs camp are still overflowing with water. The bush is still lush and green, leading to the healthy and well-fed appearance of all the animals in the area. Daytime temperatures are hot, but the early mornings and nights are delightfully cool - the perfect conditions for nocturnal predators.

Lead To Lions

It was on a game drive when we spotted a black-backed jackal. It was behaving erratically. Howling, running and quickly turning as if it had an itch.

As we approached the eccentric jackal, we were pleasantly surprised by our large Deteema male lion mating with a lioness from the Deteema pride. This was clearly what had made the jackal behave in such a way.

Crouching Cheetahs

Our guides possess the crucial skill of deciding between two sightings. The decision is not an easy one. They often need to decide between tracking lions, who had been calling to each other or following fresh cheetah tracks.

Thai time, we chose the cheetah tracks. We couldn’t miss out on seeing the world’s fastest land animal hunting in the bush. We followed the tracks of two cheetahs stalking roan antelopes in a salt pan. Unfortunately for the predators, the roan spotted them approaching and bolted into the thickets… Better luck next time.

An Elephant-Themed Sundowner

As the sun set, we headed towards our favourite sundowner spot for a refreshing drink. As we arrived, guests spotted an elephant skull, and as our guide was explaining the skeletal remains, we heard branches breaking in the distance.

We excitedly looked in the direction of the sound and saw a grey, gentle giant strolling pridefully towards the pan!

Hearing Crickets…

The green season brings a fascinating variety of insects that fly under the radar. They might not be as adrenaline-spiking as the king of the jungle, but the orchestra of Ground-armoured crickets can be enjoyed all over Deteema.

During this season, we come across countless numbers of them mating, digging their nest sites and even cannibalising each other. But as soon as the plains dry up, so do cricket sightings. That's why we love to take the time to admire these interesting insects when we can.

April has been an amazing month for wildlife sightings. Join us next month for another exciting Deteema Springs Camp wildlife story.

Until next time,
Ntandoe
