Monachira Camp Wildlife Stories August 2026
Weather Report
August 2026 at Monachira Camp had the perfect conditions for game viewing and wildlife photography. Mornings were cool and crisp, warming up as the days went by until the clear skies and hot weather reached their peak. Visibility was excellent, with sparse vegetation blocking our view, while the pans and channels’ water levels remained good, attracting wildlife to concentrated areas.
King & Queen
During a game drive, we located a pride of lions resting in the shade near a dry riverbed in the mid-morning. To one side, a male and female lion were lying together, relaxing away from the midday heat before their next hunt. The pair were almost motionless, giving our guests the best opportunity to photograph the savannah’s apex predator in a tranquil atmosphere.
Standing Tall
We came across a lone giraffe browsing through the leaves of an acacia tree during one late afternoon. The giraffe was incredibly calm, even allowing us to approach slowly, to the delight of some of our younger guests. It used its nearly 20-inch tongue to strip the remaining green and juicy leaves from the rest of the dry foliage on the tree.
Above & Below
Towards the end of August, we spotted lions resting on the ground, while a leopard sat in a tree nearby. There was no kill present, but we were nevertheless thrilled at the rare opportunity to see both of these amazing animals in close proximity after a morning of searching.
Catch & Consume
During August, we received a group of guests who had always wanted to witness a kill. Luckily for us, a pack of African wild dogs, our most successful pack hunters, gave them quite the show. We found two wild dogs stalking a red lechwe. They evaded detection until the right moment, then pounced and killed their prey!
