Weather Report
As Spring arrived, the weather has slowly been warming up. Average midday temperatures were between 17ºC and 36ºC, while early mornings and evenings were still cold and a bit windy. The view from Ngoma Safari Lodge has been getting better as floodwaters fill the nearby pan, attracting tons of zebra to the area.
K9 Scermish
Early during one of our morning game drives, we were treated to an exceptional sighting. As we turned the corner into the Simwanza Valley, we spotted six African wild dogs devouring an impala carcass. After a few minutes, the impala was completely consumed. Within 15 minutes, the scent of blood attracted the attention of a lone hyena. The wild dogs and the hyena got into a little fight that ended when the dogs moved away from the pile of meatless bones.
Nothing To Eat Here
During a game drive in the Chobe Forest Reserve, we started following a pride of seven lions from Kabulubula along the river towards the Kalua area. Our excitement peaked when the lions noticed some nearby warthogs and started hunting. We watched at a distance as they stalked and chased their prey. Unfortunately for them, their hunt resulted in nothing but wasted energy and a few stunning images.
Must-See
It was on a full-day safari excursion into the beautiful Botswana wilderness that we got to see two of the most impressive big cat species in the world. Around midday, we spotted the first, a pride of seven lions resting under the shade of a tree. After observing them for some time, we moved on to Stretch Point to have some drinks.
After having our drinks, we spotted the second big cat species, a leopard hunting impala. We followed it for awhile watching as it stalked its prey, calculated the best time to pounce, and successfully caught and killed the impala right next to our vehicle!
Elephant Island
As it got drier, different species of animals moved from areas in search of fresh food and water. Chobe National Park has become one of the most popular destinations for wildlife in Southern Africa. Its woodlands and riverine regions are favoured by elephants.
During one of our game drives, we watched as an elephant swam to Sedudu Island in search of food and water. It was a spectacular sight, offering us a rare glimpse of just how capable elephants are in the water.
