Wildlife Stories Kiri Camp June 2025

Thanks to the overflowing Boro Chanel near Kiri Camp, unimaginable numbers of wildlife are flocking to the area around camp. Mornings and evenings are great time to look for predators hunting in the cooler hours of the day. Midday is still quite warm and sunny, allowing us to spot some of the more unusual and unique African fauna.

Feasting Leopard

In the early hours of the morning, a couple of our guests heard a commotion coming from around their tent. At the 6:00 am wake-up call, our guide noticed that the walking path had drag marks and blood splatter leading underneath the elevated tent. What he saw next delighted us for the next 24 hours. There was a male leopard feasting on a kill.

The guide safely ushered the guests into a safari vehicle and informed the rest of the camp of the incredible sighting. The leopard leisurely finished its meal and rested under the tent for the remainder of the day. The following day, it was gone.

One Game Drive, Two Cheetah Sightings

Expect the unexpected on a night drive! On this occasion, we followed a cheetah and watched it hunt with no success. We followed it for about an hour before deciding to move on to another sighting.

To our surprise, we spotted a female cheetah and her three teenage cubs resting on a termite mound. What amazing luck!

Annoyed Lions

On an evening game drive, our affectionately dubbed lion brothers, Dolce and Gabbana, were resting on a termite mound when a hyena suddenly walked past. Annoyed by its sheer presence, the brothers chased after it. After a long, dusty chase filled with snarling and growling, the hyena escaped into nearby thickets.

Lion Photo Op

Sundowners are some of our favourite activities to set up. Not only do you get to relax in the natural stillness of the African savannah, but you might also be lucky enough to spot an exciting sighting while you’re at it.

Towards the end of the month, we set up a sundowner on the banks of the Boro Chanel. Whilst our guests were enjoying their drinks, a massive pride of lions appeared. Two males, four females and seven cubs all bowed their heads to drink from the river in a single-file line.

The perfect photo op, it was too perfect to be planned.

Inquisitive Hyena

Drawn in by the smell of our braai, the southern African version of a barbeque, a hyena appeared as we overlooked the floodplains during dinner. Our adrenaline was pumping when it came within meters of our table. It circled and paced up and down, watching all of us until it vanished into the night.

June was another spectacular month for wildlife sightings. Let’s see what else the Okavango Delta has in store for us over the next few weeks!

Until next time,
