Ngoma Safari Lodge Wildlife Sightings Aug 2024
August had been a windy month here in Botswana, with a lot of dust being swept up and many trees losing their leaves. However, the leafless trees mean many wonderful sightings for us here at Ngoma Safari Lodge, as animals looking for greener pastures eventually find themselves on our doorstep by the Chobe River.
The Gang’s All Here
Early on in the month, we witnessed something exceptionally rare. On the plains of Chobe National Park, we saw giraffes, waterbucks, impalas, buffalos and warthogs grazing together. This was a magnificent example of nature in harmony, but it also served a practical purpose. With so many animals in one location, there are many more on the lookout for sneaky predators that also could warn the entire group. This was a magnificent start to August!
Hang With Hippos
The Chobe riverfront is one of the few places in Botswana where you can find hippos outside the water during the day. This is a unique sight, as hippos tend only to leave the water in the evenings to forage for food. On one particular day on the Chobe River, a group of guests saw some hippos out on land during the daytime! This was a very exciting moment for them as it was their first time seeing hippos outside the water.
One For the Sighting’s List
Towards the end of the month, another amazingly rare sighting happened. A group of guests saw a breeding herd of elephants swim across the Chobe River! Both the guide and guests were amazed at the sight and even mentioned that this was a sighting they had at the top of their list. Moments like these reinforce why we love Chobe so much.
Finale
On the last day of one of our guests’ visit, we took them out on a final game drive to bid farewell to this wonderful destination. On the trip, we saw a female leopard drinking water in the open area of one of our old campsites. We seldom see leopards in general, but to see one in an open area where we can truly marvel at its beauty is a blessing.
Until next time,
MK
