Verney’s Camp Wildlife Sightings January 2025
The rains arrived with the new year and have provided life-giving water to the animals and vegetation at Verney’s Camp. We observed rainfall of up to 20ml almost daily. The rains generally occured in quick bursts and offered much relief to our hot summer days.
Some animals relished the opportunity to traverse the plains in the rain, while others sought shelter under bushes and trees.
Conserving Energy
We came across a pack of five African wild dogs sleeping beside the road near Jambile. Wild dogs are some of the most successful pack hunters in the world. But hunting requires energy and the dogs were taking advantage of the shade on the side of the road to rest up before their next big pursuit.
The Next Generation of Guides
Every so often, camp is quiet. During a lull in January, our guides were determined to continue their training whenever possible. So, we took the opportunity to conduct a training session for our guides studying for their final examinations.
We always try to cover a range of topics, but stumbling upon a hyena den, the conversation quickly focussed on the dynamic behaviour of hyenas. This particular den was active and we noticed that the hyena pups are slowly starting to get more adventurous by peeking their heads out from the safety and darkness of the den.
Training new safari guides is always a fulfilling experience for us. We love watching them fall deeper in love with the wild as they continue to learn and grow.
Where Elephants Roam
Verney’s is the home of elephants. Every few days, massive herds of these gentle giants parade in front of the camp to eat the vegetation nearby and drink from the pan. This is one of the most incredible sights to see while enjoying a relaxing afternoon in camp.
January was an incredible start to 2025 wildlife spotting. We’re looking forward to the rest of the year and wish our guides studying for their final exams the best of luck!
