Monachira Camp Wildlife Stories September 2025
September at Monachira was yet again filled with incredible sightings.
Weather Report
Hot weather is what we know best at Monachira Camp! September’s temperatures peaked in the afternoons with a maximum of 37 degrees Celsius, while early mornings and evenings were cooler, in the teens. Winds persisted throughout the month, and we even had a few drops of rain, but we doubt there will be any significant showers soon.
Lioness In A Tree
In August, we reported witnessing a lioness climbing a tree. And it seems she’s only getting stronger and more nimble in her pursuit as time goes by.
We spotted a lioness again, feeding on a kill with two of her sisters. After they finished eating, she climbed the tree to gain higher ground. This time her movements were a lot more graceful, and we were happy to have another chance to see her skills.
More Buffaloes, More Lions
Due to the receding floodwaters, many new areas are opening up for us and the land-based wildlife in Botswana. As the floodwaters recede, the nutrient-rich banks of the Okavango Delta emerge and are the perfect spot for grazing. A herd of buffalo has recently started grazing under a canopy of sausage trees, and our local lions have also made their way there to scope out their newest potential food source.
First Leopard In Monachira Camp
During breakfast, a female leopard appeared in front of camp and climbed a nearby tree. We immediately scrambled to get all of our guests so we could view the beautiful creature.
This is the first time a leopard has been seen during the day at camp.
Long-Awaited Wild Dog Pup Sighting
When impalas are alarm calling and running in all directions, we know predators are close. On this occasion, it was the work of a small pack of African wild dogs and their pups.
When we caught up to the pack, they were relaxing while the pups were joyfully playing around the safari vehicle. This was the first time we’ve seen the pups since May, so we're ecstatic to know they are all happy and healthy.
Monachira Camp had some wonderful sightings in September. Watch this space for some more incredible wildlife stories soon.
Until next time,
