Gomoti Plains Camp Wildlife Stories December 2025

Weather Report

A brilliant amount of rain characterised December at Gomoti Plains Camp. The surrounding vegetation changed from an arid, light yellowish colour to a vibrant, lush green. The rains also attracted many incredible migratory bird species, making Gomoti Plains just as much a birders' paradise as it is a breathtaking safari destination.

Big Cats

2025 ended with an incredible streak of big cat sightings. Our resident pride of lions were frequently spotted around camp and even gave us some nightly roars and calls. Later in the month, we saw a pregnant female cheetah feeding on a young impala. Even the leopards were on full display, with a female and her young cub prowling the plains for their next meal.

Wild Dogs

We often see African wild dogs around these parts, but with the rain scattering the plains game to higher and drier areas, spotting them sometimes required a leisurely trip in the safari vehicle. Luckily, their characteristic helped us track the wild dogs to see them sweetly play with one another.

Unsung Sightings

Sometimes the sightings just need us to step outside of our tents. In December, porcupines and warthogs have been proudly displaying their offspring in and around camp.

Although not spoken of often, porcupines are some of the most interesting animals we have in the Okavango Delta. They are large, slow-moving rodents famous for their unique self-defence mechanism. The up to 30,000 barbed quills covering their backs, sides and tails. A not-so-famous fact about them is that they are amazing tree climbers, often living in trees so they can forage for food.

December at Gomoti was just the month we needed to end 2025. Stay tuned to find out what incredible sightings opened up the New Year, right here.

Until next time,
