Gomoti Plains Camp Wildlife Stories August 2025
August signalled the beginning of even warmer weather. Early mornings were cool but did not require hot water bottles, while midday temperatures reached a high of 35 degrees Celsius. We expect a lot of animals to congregate near water sources.
Wild Dogs On The Hunt
Through a combination of highly coordinated stalking, fierce chasing and unbelievable stamina, African wild dogs have cemented themselves as one of Southern Africa’s most impressive hunters.
We managed to spot these awe-inspiring dogs while they were looking for their next meal. They were rallying each other with a complex communicative sneeze system, deciding their next move.

Scenes From The Riverbank
In one sitting, we managed to see a leopard drinking from the river, buffalo grazing on the grass, and a bat-eared fox just sleeping the day away.

Leopard Casonova
We spotted a beautiful male leopard while on safari, one who knew how remarkable he was. We followed him to two female leopardesses, from which he casually chose who he wanted to mate with.
This was a profound sighting for our guests, who saw how new life is made in the wild.

Hyena Frenzy
Sometimes, choice can be a burden.
We witnessed this on safari when we spotted a clan of hyenas scattered around trying to hunt red lechwes, baboons, impalas and even giraffes all at the same time! Safe to say, their split attention didn’t result in a meal for the family of cackling creatures.
August was an amazing month for wildlife sightings at Gomoti Plains. From mating leopards to hunting wild dogs, September has a lot to live up to.
Until next time,
