Monachira Camp Wildlife Stories May 2026
Weather Report
May was unusually wet at Monachira Camp. We experienced unseasonal rainfall that cooled down the bush significantly. Mornings and nights were cold and crisp, requiring a few extra layers, while midday and afternoons were still hot. The rain did, however, revitalise the vegetation around camp, making safaris a little greener as we head into the dry season.
On The Hunt
During a game drive, we heard the alarm call of a herd of red lechwe. Anticipating an incredible sighting, we decided to investigate and found a group of lions actively stalking them in some tall reeds. We could feel the tension in the air as the lions drew closer, each step measured and with intent. Suddenly, the group broke into a sprint after the herd. The red lechwe ran hard, but the lions closed in fast. Unfortunately, the chase ended outside of our view.
Survivor
We encountered a female leopard near camp along our drainage line. What stood out was her condition. She appeared severely injured, limping and showing signs of discomfort. Everyone at camp was concerned, but also awestruck at her resilience.
She kept her distance, and after a short while observing her, disappeared into some nearby thickets.
On The Hunt (Again)
The lions near Monachira Camp have been very active this May. We caught up to another pride of lions working together to hunt down their prey. They positioned themselves downwind and crept closer before breaking out into a coordinated chase. The action was heart-pumping, and the teamwork was amazing. A perfect example of lions on the hunt.
African Rock Python
While out on a safari drive, a massive African rock python was spotted crossing the road right in front of us. Its movements were slow, yet powerful. Its thick body coiled and uncoiled as it made its way into a nearby bush. We were amazed by its sheer size, easily reaching over three metres in length. This was definitely the highlight of May’s wildlife sightings.
Monachira Camp had some spectacular sightings for us. Come back for more Wildlife Stories from Machaba Safaris soon.
Until next time,
