Wildlife Stories Kiri Camp June 2026
Weather Report
June marks the beginning of the cool, dry winter season in the Okavango Delta. Weather conditions are generally sunny, dry, and pleasant during the day, while early mornings and nights are cold. Average daytime temperatures have cooled down to a range of 25-26°C, and mornings and evenings range from 6ºC to 12ºC.
Rainfall has averaged 2-3 mm around Kiri Camp; however, the annual Okavango floodwaters from Angola have finally arrived, resulting in a steady rise in water levels throughout June. This, coupled with the dry weather and reduced vegetation density, makes it one of the best times to embark on an exciting African adventure.
Defended Kill
We caught up to a pack of African wild dogs hunting an impala. Through some of the most impressive teamwork in the animal kingdom, the dogs managed to take down their prey and kill it. Shortly after, two hyenas arrived to try to steal their kill. The wild dogs, however, would not let that happen. The pack stood its ground, snarling and barking at the hyenas. After the intense standoff, the hyenas were eventually chased away, allowing the dogs to feed undisturbed.
Cat & Dogs
During a game drive in the Okavango Delta, we were pleased to see a male leopard on a freshly killed impala. Moments after we spotted it, the rosetted cat skillfully dragged its meal high up a tree to keep it out of the reach of potential scavengers. Later that day, we also saw a pack of 15 African wild dogs on the hunt. The dogs covered ground quickly, looking for any prey they could take down in the surrounding area. Each one of these sightings brought an exciting wildlife encounter for our guests and us.
Triple Sighting
It was an incredible day of wildlife sightings at Kiri Camp near the middle of the month. On a single game drive, we saw three amazing sightings before we decided to go back to camp. The first sighting was of a male cheetah coalition gracefully moving through the plains near camp. Later, we saw what looked to be a different cheetah coalition resting on the top of a termite mound and scanning the plains for prey. Finally, we saw a pack of African wild dogs peacefully resting in front of their den.
The Feud Continues
What an unforgettable sighting! Towards the end of the month, we witnessed a pack of African wild dogs come face-to-face with a mother cheetah and her cub. The standoff was as intense as it was brief. The cheetahs sprinted away in opposite directions with the dogs in hot pursuit. We watched in awe as the dogs barked and yelped after the cheetahs before the spotted cats ducked into nearby thickets, where the dogs gave up the chase.
Kiri Camp was brimming with spectacular sightings in June. Come back soon for more Wildlife Stories from the Okavango Delta.
Until next time,
