Kiri Camp Wildlife Sightings April 2024
April started with higher temperatures here at Kiri Camp, but as the month progressed, we experienced a welcome shift to cooler, windier, and cloudier conditions. Evenings have become notably chilly, and provide a refreshing break from the daytime heat. It's been an interesting transition, offering visitors a diverse range of weather experiences to enjoy amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Okavango Delta.
A Thing Of Beauty
At Kiri Camp, guests were treated to a breathtaking sight on a beautiful afternoon when a majestic leopard appeared along the Maun Crossing main road. The sleek feline exuded confidence as it gracefully strolled by, captivating everyone's attention and providing ample opportunity for guests to snap photos of its striking presence. Eventually, the leopard found respite in the branches of a nearby tree, where it settled in for a relaxing moment.
Success For The Wild Dogs
A captivating scene unfolded as a pack with six wild dogs relentlessly pursued an impala. Almost as soon as they took the Impala down they began to feed on it. The spectacle gripped everyone's attention, evoking a mix of awe and empathy, a common reaction to a life-and-death struggle in Africa.
Grace and Speed
The sight of a cheetah is truly awe-inspiring. On one sunny afternoon, a cheetah, appearing quite full yet very thirsty, sauntered gracefully towards the water's edge to drink. For our guests who had not yet seen a cheetah, the moment was spellbinding. We lingered for a while, thrilled by the rare privilege of witnessing such a majestic creature in its natural habitat.
Ever-Watchful Mothers
Picture two lionesses lounging in the greenery of Matswere pan, their eight playful cubs darting about. The lionesses, ever-watchful, kept their young hidden, but the cubs couldn't resist the lure of the open space. It was a stunning display of wildlife, set against the peaceful backdrop of a quiet, cool day.
Unlucky Baboon
On a tranquil afternoon, Tops was driving guests back to the airstrip. Suddenly, the sight of a lioness in hot pursuit of baboons was spotted. In one swift move, she captured a baboon. It was a shocking scene for some yet thrilling and fascinating. Was she simply indulging in a lazy hunt, or was hunger driving her actions?
This has been a thrilling month of wildlife encounters. The wild untamed nature of the Okavango Delta never seems to disappoint.
Until next time,
Oddy
