Machaba Camp & Little Machaba April Game Sightings

By 2nd May 2018News

What an incredible month April has been at Machaba Camp & Little Machaba. The rains finally subsided & were replaced by the cold winter temperatures. Towards the end of the month the beanies, fleeces & scarfs were dug out of the bottom of the cupboards & put to good use.

Sightings have been phenomenal – with as much as 5 different leopards sighted in one day! Leopard cubs have been witnessed chasing squirrels up trees, playfully trying to stalk guineafowls & on one occasion Mmatsebe – our resident leopardess – killed an African Wild cat.

Lions were found munching a baby elephant they had killed the night before. A sighting not for the faint hearted. However bellies full, the male lions enjoyed their rest before jumping the river & heading off into the mopane bush.

Wild dogs have been very active in & around camp this month as well – they killed a baby waterbuck on our bush dinner spot the other day… We have seen the pack on several occasions hunting – rather successfully might we add.

Good news for all you birders out there! A Pel’s Fishing Owl was seen this month as well. Always such a pleasure for them to be spotted.

Plains game has been plentiful in & around Machaba Camp. Elephants have started to gather at the river once more & their presence in camp is rapidly increasing, leaving some of our guests a little anxious at night.

All of us – wildlife included – are looking forward to an amazing winter season here in Khwai.
One tip: pack warm as the winter is setting in! We have the camp fire going to keep you cozy & warm & the hot chocolates with Amarula are good to go!

That’s it for now from all of us here at Machaba Camp & Little Machaba!
Until next month…
